Canadian Passenger Vehilcle Recalls

The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for January 2021 Are as Follows

  • KIA STINGER 2019

Issue: On certain cars equipped with a 2.0 L T-GDI engine, an engine compartment fire could occur while driving. Kia believes that a fire could start in or near the brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).
Note: This recall does not affect vehicles equipped with Smart Cruise Control (SCC).

Safety Risk: The car could catch fire while driving.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a new fuse kit. The kit contains two new fuses of 25A instead of 40A, which are designed to prevent an over-current condition.
Note: You may have received a notice from Kia in December 2020 to advise that your vehicle was not part of this recall, however, this is a NEW recall expansion. Contact Kia Canada or your local dealer if you have any questions about this recall. Recall Details

  • VOLVO V60 2021
  • VOLVO V90 2021
  • VOLVO XC60 2021
  • VOLVO XC90 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, the screws that attach the control unit for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) may not have been properly tightened. As a result, the SRS control unit may not work properly and could come loose in a crash. If this happens, the seat belt pretensioner(s), airbag systems and high-voltage battery disconnect may not work correctly. Note: This problem may cause the SRS warning lamp to turn on and a “Service Urgent” message may display in the instrument cluster.

Safety Risk: A seat belt pre-tensioner, airbag system or high-voltage battery disconnect that does not work properly in a crash could create an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the mounting screws for the SRS control unit. They will be tightened, if necessary. Recall Details

  • FORD BRONCO SPORT 2021
  • FORD EDGE 2020
  • FORD ESCAPE 2020
  • LINCOLN CORSAIR 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear drive unit was not properly filled with oil. As a result, the rear axle could seize. If this happens, the rear wheels could lock up and cause a loss of power to the wheels.

Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the passenger front airbag inflator.
Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Recall Details

  • HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2012
  • HYUNDAI SONATA 2011 2012 2013 2016
  • HYUNDAI VELOSTER 2015 2016

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a 1.6 L GDI, 2.0 L GDI, or 2.4 L MPI engine, the connecting rod bearings could wear prematurely. As a result, there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine and/or the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with worn connecting rod bearings, the engine could fail. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. In some cases, a damaged connecting rod could puncture the engine block and cause an oil leak.
Note: For the Sonata model, only the Sonata Hybrid is affected by this recall.
Additional Note: Engine compartment fires can happen for many different reasons. In some cases, there is too much damage to find the cause of a fire.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Oil that leaks onto a hot component could cause a fire.

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an engine inspection test, to determine if there is bearing damage. If damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also update the software for the engine control module.
Note: Hyundai recommends that you should always follow the correct vehicle maintenance schedule, which is printed in the Owner’s Manual. Recall Details

Issue: Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high-temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function.

Note: This recall is for vehicles that were originally sold or ever registered in certain areas of the United States that experience high or moderate levels of heat and humidity, and that were subsequently imported into Canada.
Affected states:
American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), Virginia and West Virginia.

Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the passenger front airbag inflator. Note: This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Recall Details

  • KIA SOUL EV 2019 2020 2021

  • KIA OPTIMA 2011 2012 2013
  • KIA SORENTO 2012
  • KIA SOUL 2014 2015
  • KIA SPORTAGE 2012

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.0 L NU GDI or 2.4 L Theta II MPI engine, an engine compartment fire could occur while driving. Kia is conducting this recall as a preventative measure to prevent fire risk due to potential fuel leaks, oil leaks and/or engine damage. In some situations, you may notice any of the following symptoms: there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine; the check engine light and/or the oil pressure warning light could turn on; you may smell fuel, burning or smoke; or you may notice oil leaks. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail and/or a fire could occur. An engine failure can cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart.
Note: For the Optima model, only the Optima Hybrid is affected by this recall.

Safety Risk: An engine compartment fire can create a risk of injury. A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the engine and engine compartment. The dealer will inspect for fuel and/or engine oil leaks, perform an engine test and make any repairs, including engine replacement, if necessary. Kia will also perform a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update free of charge, once it is available for your vehicle. This update will detect and prevent engine damage from worn connecting rod bearings. Recall Details

  • MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS 2019

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the compliance label and tire pressure placard may not have been installed. As a result, information such as vehicle load capacity and tire inflation pressure may not be easily accessible. This could lead you to inflate the tires incorrectly. Driving a vehicle with tires that are overinflated or underinflated could cause poor handling and/or a tire failure.

Safety Risk: Tires that are not properly inflated could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. The dealer will install the missing label(s), as necessary. Recall Details

  • FORD MUSTANG 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020

Issue: On certain cars, the brake pedal and bracket assembly could fracture if rapid and forceful pressure is applied to the brake pedal, as typically seen during track and competition driving. If this happens, there could be a loss of braking.
Note: This equipment recall only affects the following brake pedal and bracket assembly part numbers:
FR3Z-2455-AA
FR3Z-2455-AB

Safety Risk: A loss of brakes can create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify its dealers of this recall. While dealers will attempt to contact people who may have purchased a part affected by this recall, if you have had the brake pedal and bracket assembly replaced on your car, you should contact the dealer that sold or installed it to find out if it is affected by this recall. Any part that is affected by this recall will be replaced, free of charge. Recall Details

  • NISSAN TITAN 2020
  • NISSAN TITAN XD 2020

Issue: On certain trucks equipped with a gasoline engine, the engine wiring harness (EGI) may not have been assembled correctly. As a result, an exposed wire could cause a short circuit. If this happens, the engine could stall and/or there could be electrical arcing.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Electrical arcing could damage surrounding material and increase the risk of a fire.

Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect the EGI harness and replace it with a new one if it is damaged. If no damage is found, the harness will be reassembled correctly. Recall Details

  • INFINITI M35 HYBRID 2012 2013
  • INFINITI M56 2011 2012 2013

Issue: On certain vehicles, the propeller shaft (driveshaft) could break while driving and cause a loss of power to the wheels. In severe cases, a propeller shaft failure could also damage the parking brake. If this happens, there may be no way to stop movement of the vehicle when it is parked. This could allow the vehicle to roll away.

Safety Risk: A loss of power to the wheels or a vehicle rollaway could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the propeller shaft. Recall Details

  • AUDI RS5 2018 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the cover for the positive battery terminal could be damaged in a rear crash. This can cause the car to lose electrical power. If this happens, it may not be possible to open the doors from the outside and/or the hazard lights may not work.

Safety Risk: Doors that cannot be opened from the outside could increase the risk of injury after a crash. Hazard lights that do not work could make the vehicle less visible and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the plus (positive) terminal cover. Recall Details

  • HONDA ACCORD 2018 2019 2020
  • HONDA ACCORD HYBRID 2018 2019 2020
  • HONDA INSIGHT 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem in the Body Control Module (BCM) could cause different systems and warnings to stop working. This can include: the window defrosting/defogging system, windshield wipers, turn signals and lights, rearview camera display, and power windows.

Safety Risk: Vehicle systems that stop working suddenly could increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the BCM software. Recall Details

  • ACURA ILX 2013 2014 2015
  • ACURA ILX HYBRID 2013
  • HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2012
  • HONDA FIT 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014

Issue: On certain vehicles, the paint on the front axle shafts could delaminate or become damaged by road debris. As a result the axle shaft could corrode. If this happens, the axle shafts could break and cause a loss of power to the wheels. Also, if this happens and the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could roll away.

Safety Risk: A rear-wheel lock-up while driving could cause a loss of control that could result in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to check the oil level in the rear-drive unit. If the drive unit is filled to the minimum oil level, it will be topped up to the full level. If the oil is below the minimum level, the drive unit will be replaced. Recall Details

  • FORD POLICE INTERCEPTOR UTILITY (EXPLORER) 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the windshield washer fluid reservoir may have been filled with washer fluid that was contaminated with brake fluid. This could reduce the driver’s ability to clear the windshield and cause damage to the wiper/washer system.

Safety Risk: A windshield that is not properly cleared could block a driver’s view. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to flush out the washer system and replace the washer bottleneck, washer pump assembly, fluid level sensor as well as front and rear wiper blades. The dealer will also inspect and repair paint and exterior components, if necessary. Recall Details

  • VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2020
  • VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 2020
  • VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN 2021

  • VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE 2012 2013 2014

Issue: On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high-temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function.

Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver-front airbag.
Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Recall Details

  • NISSAN PATHFINDER 2013 2014 2015

Issue: On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may not have been installed correctly. Over time, this could cause the stop lamp relay to fail and stick in the on position. If this happens, engine power may be reduced and the brake lights will stay on. Additionally, the vehicle may be started and shifted into gear without pressing the brake pedal. Note: This recall replaces Transport Canada recall 2016-264. Vehicles that were repaired under that recall require a second inspection.

Safety Risk: The ability to shift the vehicle out of park without depressing the brake pedal and/or starting the engine without depressing the brake pedal could increase the risk of a crash. Brake lights that stay on could cause other road users not to recognize when the vehicle is braking. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the stop lamp switch and relay. If the stop lamp relay was deleted during a previous repair, no further action is required. For all other vehicles, the dealer will adjust or move the stop lamp switch and replace the stop lamp relay. Recall Details

  • HONDA ELEMENT 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010

This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador).

Safety Risk: A rear trailing arm that separates could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the rear trailing arm front mount bolts. If the vehicle passes the inspection, the dealer will apply corrosion protection and install support braces. Honda will offer to repurchase vehicles that do not pass the inspection. In the event the repurchase is declined by an owner, a secondary inspection and body shop repair method may be possible. Recall Details

  • SUBARU IMPREZA 2021

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, a nut on the transmission shift cable may not have been properly tightened. If the nut comes loose, the transmission may not shift gears when the shift lever is moved. This could cause the transmission to be in a different gear than what is indicated. If a driver attempts to exit the vehicle while the transmission is not in the Park (P) position, and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle could move suddenly.
Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Safety Risk: Sudden and unexpected movement of the vehicle could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Subaru will inspect and tighten the transmission shift lever cable nut, if necessary. Recall Details

  • VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS 2021
  • VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS CROSS SPORT 2020 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front steering knuckles may not have been manufactured correctly. As a result, the steering knuckle could break suddenly while driving. If this happens, there would be a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could create a risk of a crash.

  • INFINITI QX50 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label may have printing errors. As a result, information on the label may be difficult or impossible to read. This could be confusing and lead to overloading of the tires, which can cause poor handling and/or a tire failure. Canadian regulations require this information to be printed clearly on the label.

Safety Risk: Poor handling or a tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Nissan will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the tire and loading information label. If there are printing errors, the label will be replaced. Recall Details

  • FORD EDGE 2007 2008 2009 2010

This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function.

Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.
Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected. Recall Details

  • HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2014 2015 2016
  • HYUNDAI SONATA 2017
  • HYUNDAI TUCSON 2014 2015 2016 2017

Issue: Hyundai Auto Canada is conducting a Product Improvement Campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart.

  • TESLA MODEL S 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
  • TESLA MODEL X 2016 2017 2018

Issue: On certain vehicles, the internal memory for the media control unit (MCU) could run out of storage capacity over time. If this happens, the center display can turn off while driving and cause some of the car’s systems not to work properly. This includes the rearview camera display, defrost/defog control settings, and exterior turn signal lighting.

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. A windshield that cannot be defrosted/defogged could reduce visibility. Turn signals that do not work could cause a following driver not to recognize that a vehicle ahead intends to turn. These conditions could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify the owner and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the passenger-front airbag module. Recall Details

  • BMW X5 2021
  • BMW X7 2021

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the bolt that attaches the universal joint to the steering shaft may not have been properly tightened. As a result, the bolt may loosen over time. If this happens, a driver may hear a noise or notice play in the steering. If you continue to drive the car with this problem, this could cause a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could create a risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the steering column shaft universal joint. Depending on the results of the inspection, the dealer will either replace the attachment bolt, or replace the steering column shaft, universal joint, and bolt. Recall Details
