Canadian Passenger Vehicle Recalls for September 2020

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our September 2020 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for September 2020 are as Follows

 

  • KIA SORENTO 2014 2015

Issue: On certain vehicles, brake fluid can enter the brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) and cause a short circuit.
Note: This problem may cause the ABS warning light to turn on.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. If there is a brake fluid leak in the HECU, it will be replaced. Kia recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

  • HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT 2013 2014 2015

Issue: On certain vehicles, brake fluid can enter the brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) and cause a short circuit. Note: This problem may cause the ABS warning light to turn on.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to have the HECU inspected and replaced if necessary. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the passenger-front airbag may not have been folded properly. As a result, the airbag may inflate with too much force in a crash where the airbag deploys.

Safety Risk: An airbag that inflates with too much force could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the passenger front airbag. Recall Details


  • BUICK ENCORE GX 2020

Issue: A small number of vehicles may be missing the rear attachment bolts for one or both of the front seats. As a result, the seats could move in a crash.

Safety Risk: Seats that are not installed correctly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the attachments for both front seats. The rear attachment bolts will be installed if they are missing. Recall Details


  • ISUZU FTR 2018 2019 2020 2021

Issue: On certain trucks, the ground cable that connects the starter motor to the frame could break. If this happens, the engine may crank slowly or not at all, causing the vehicle not to start. Additionally, if a driver repeatedly attempts to start the truck after the cable has broken, the power steering hose could act as a conductor and overheat. This can cause the power steering hose to rupture and create a power steering fluid leak.

Safety Risk: Power steering fluid that leaks onto a hot surface could cause a fire.

Corrective Actions: Isuzu will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to replace the starter ground cable and inspect the power steering hose for damage. The hose will be replaced, as necessary. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI TUCSON 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) could corrode internally and cause a short circuit.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions:  Hyundai will notify owners of this problem by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are still being finalized. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. Recall Details

  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLB CLASS 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the adjustable second-row seats may not be properly attached on one side. As a result, the seats could move in a crash.

Safety Risk: Seats that move in a crash could create an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the installation of the second-row seats. The seats will be repaired, if necessary. Recall Details

  • FORD ESCAPE 2020
  • FORD TRANSIT CONNECT 2019 2020
  • LINCOLN CORSAIR 2020
  • LINCOLN NAUTILUS 2019 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the start-stop accumulator in the transmission may have missing or loose bolts. As a result, transmission fluid could leak and eventually cause the transmission to stop working. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. Note: This problem may cause the wrench light to turn on.

Safety Risk: A transmission fluid leak onto a hot surface can create the risk of a fire. Additionally, a loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the transmission start-stop accumulator. Recall Details


  • HONDA RIDGELINE 2017 2018 2019 2020

Issue: This recall is for Honda Genuine Accessory tri-fold tonneau covers that were sold as an accessory by Honda dealers. There may be a problem with the bed-cover that could cause it to come loose while driving and detach from the truck.

Safety Risk: A bed-cover cover that separates from a moving truck could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer for an inspection. If necessary, the dealer will install a tether between the center and rear panels of the tonneau cover to prevent them from separating. The dealer will also provide you with an updated accessory owner’s manual and apply warning labels that remind you to properly secure the tonneau cover before driving.
Note: Until the recall repairs are completed, you can prevent the tonneau cover from coming loose by removing and storing it. Recall Details


  • GENESIS G70 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, there could a problem with the low-pressure fuel pump assembly. As a result, the flow of fuel to the engine could be partially blocked. Under certain conditions, this could cause the engine to stall.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the jet nozzle of the low-pressure fuel pump assembly, and repair it, if necessary. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the seat belt anchor bolts for the third-row seat belts may not be properly tightened. This could cause the seat belts not to perform as designed in a crash.

Safety Risk: A seat belt that is not properly attached could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will contact the owners to notify them of this recall. Volkswagen will repurchase the affected vehicles. Recall Details


  • FORD MUSTANG 2020

Issue: On certain cars, the brake pedal bracket could fail during sudden braking. If this happens, there could be a loss of braking. Note: This recall only affects cars with an automatic transmission.

Safety Risk: A loss of brakes can create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to replace the brake pedal bracket assembly. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, a sensor in the electronic brake boost system may have a bad connection. Under certain driving conditions, this could cause a loss of brake assist. If this happens, there would be a sudden increase in brake pedal force required to slow or stop the vehicle.

Safety Risk: Reduced brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the electronic brake boost module. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, an electrical problem with the rearview camera could cause it not to work properly. As a result, the rearview image may be distorted or not display at all.

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rearview camera. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, parts of the front seat frame and backrest adjuster may not have been properly welded. As a result, the backrest adjustment could break in a rear-end crash and allow the seat to move.

Safety Risk: A seatback that fails could cause an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the driver and passenger front seats. The seatback frames will be replaced, as necessary. Recall Details


  • FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY 2019
  • FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY 2019

Issue: On certain trucks, the axle yokes may not have been properly welded to the front axle tubes. As a result, the axle may not be properly aligned. During hard braking, this could cause the steering wheel to be off-center, cause a change in steering sensitivity or the steering may pull to the right or left. These changes could lead to a sudden change of direction while braking.

Safety Risk: A change in steering while braking could create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to inspect the front axle yoke welds. The dealer will replace any axle assembly that is not properly welded. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the front seat belt retractors. As a result, the seat belts may not work as designed in a crash.

Safety Risk: A seat belt that does not work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front seat belts. Recall Details


  • BMW X3 2021
  • BMW X4 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, a small part of the rearview camera image could be blocked. Canadian regulations require the full rearview image to display while the transmission is in reverse gear.

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that is not fully displayed could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: None of the affected vehicles have been sold to retail customers. BMW will instruct dealers to inspect, and if necessary, update the rearview camera software. Recall Details


  • BMW 3 SERIES 2021
  • BMW 5 SERIES 2020 2021
  • BMW X3 2020 2021
  • BMW X5 2021
  • MINI COOPER COUNTRYMAN 2020 2021

Issue: On certain plug-In hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), debris may have entered the high-voltage battery during production. As a result, the battery could short circuit.

Safety Risk: A short circuit in the battery could create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. BMW recommends that you should not charge your vehicle and that you should not drive the vehicle in manual mode, sport mode or use the shift paddles until the recall repairs have been completed. BMW also recommends that you should drain the high-voltage battery via iDrive, by setting/leaving the charging state at 30%, until the recall repairs have been completed. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA SUPRA 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the headlight adjustment plugs were not properly installed when the vehicle was assembled. As a result, the headlights may be adjusted horizontally. Canadian regulations do not allow for horizontal headlight adjustment unless the vehicle is equipped with a built-in aiming device.

Safety Risk: Headlights that are not properly adjusted could cause reduced visibility or glare for oncoming drivers, and could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the headlights. If an incorrect adjustment plug is found, it will be replaced with the correct plug. Recall Details
