Canadian Passenger Vehicle Recalls for November 2020

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our November 2020 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for November 2020 are as Follows

 

  • SUBARU IMPREZA 2020

Issue: Certain vehicles were built with tires that may have been cured too long. As a result, the sidewall could crack or the tread and belts could separate. This could cause a tire failure and lead to a sudden loss of air pressure. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with certain Continental tires, with a date code of 2420 and mold number 416290.

Safety Risk: A tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect all four tires. If one tire is affected, all four tires will be replaced

  • MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS 2019
  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLA CLASS 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the screws holding the engine bay fuse box could become loose over time. If this happens, the fuse box could vibrate excessively, which could damage the fuses inside. Damaged fuses could cause certain vehicle functions to stop working without warning. As a result, the engine could turn off, there could be a loss of power steering assist, and/or the ESP and active brake assist systems could turn off.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power, power steering assist, ESP system and/or active brake assist could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect and tighten the screws holding the fuse box, if necessary. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLE CLASS 2020 2021
  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLS CLASS 2020 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, the seat belt buckle for the second-row middle seat may be pushed into the gap between the vehicle body and the seat cushion. If this happens, the seat occupant would not be able to latch the seat belt.

Safety Risk: Being unable to latch your seat belt can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to adjust the positioning of the second-row middle seat belt buckle. Note: Passengers should hold the seat belt buckle with one hand when fastening the seat belt. Recall Details


  • FORD EXPLORER 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017
  • FORD POLICE INTERCEPTOR UTILITY (EXPLORER) 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017

Issue: On certain vehicles, the outer ball joint for the rear suspension toe link may seize. If this happens, the toe link could break while driving. This could cause a sudden loss of vehicle stability. Note: This recall only affects vehicles that were originally sold or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador), and that were repaired under any of the following recall campaigns:
– 2016-182 (Ford Recall 16S18)
– 2017-224 or 2017-577 (Ford Recall 17S11)
– 2019-280 (Ford Recall 19S17)

Safety Risk: A loss of vehicle stability could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the ball joints for the rear suspension toe links. If a ball joint requires replacement, the dealer will replace the rear suspension knuckle. Recall Details


  • LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT 2020
  • RANGE ROVER EVOQUE 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, an electrical overload could cause the voltage converter to short circuit. If this happens, the battery warning light will turn on in the instrument cluster.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could cause overheating, smoke and create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions: Land Rover will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update vehicle software. The update will prevent an electrical overload failure in the DCDC converter. Recall Details


  • BMW X5 2020
  • BMW X6 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, a weld on the front axle support bracket could break due to a manufacturing defect. As a result, the right front control arm could become loose. If this happens, there could be a sudden change in handling.

Safety Risk: A sudden change in handling could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front axle support.Recall Details

Issue: Certain vehicles were built with tires that may have been cured too long. As a result, the sidewall could crack or the tread and belts could separate. This could lead to a sudden loss of air pressure and could cause a tire failure. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with certain Continental tires, with specific date codes and mold numbers.

Safety Risk: A tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the tires and replace the ones that have the DOT number and production mold number combinations identified by Continental. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS 2019 2020

Issue: Certain E 53 and E 63 S models may have been built without a limiter for the adjustment of the front passenger seat. As a result, the seat could be positioned too far forward.

Safety Risk: A seat that is positioned too far forward could create an increased risk of injury to the front passenger in a crash where the airbag deploys.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the adjustment range of the front passenger seat. The dealer will install an adjustment range limiter if it is missing. Recall Details


  • KIA SOUL 2014 2015 2016

Issue: Kia Canada is conducting a Product Improvement Campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure may cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: This campaign affects vehicles with a 2.0 L GDI engine.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the engine control module. Recall Details


  • FORD EXPLORER 2020
  • LINCOLN AVIATOR 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the driveshaft could break. If this happens, there could be a sudden loss of power to the wheels. A driveshaft that separates could also damage the fuel tank and cause a fuel leak. Additionally, the vehicle could move when the transmission is in Park, and the parking brake is not used. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a 3.0 L or 3.3 L engine.

Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. A loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. A parked vehicle that rolls away could also create the risk of an injury or a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the driveshaft label. Dealers will replace the driveshaft if needed. Recall Details

  • LINCOLN MKX 2014

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front link shaft (intermediate shaft) bracket can break. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. Also, if this happens and the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could roll away.

Safety Risk: A loss of power to the wheels or a vehicle rollaway could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front link shaft bracket. Recall Details


  • AUDI Q3 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the driver’s seat frame may not be properly bolted to the seat rail. This could cause the seat to wobble while driving. It could also result in the seat detaching from the seat rail in a crash.

Safety Risk: A seat that is not properly attached could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the mounting bolts for the driver’s seat. The seat structure replaced, if necessary. Recall Details


  • JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a 3.0-L EcoDiesel engine, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler could crack internally and leak. If this happens, a driver may notice a low coolant level or a heater that does not work properly.

Safety Risk: A cracked EGR cooler could create the risk of an engine fire.

Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the EGR cooler. Dealers will also inspect intake manifold and replace it as necessary. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA RAV4 HYBRID 2021

Issue: On certain RAV4 Prime models, the headlight adjustment caps were not properly installed when the vehicle was assembled. As a result, the headlights may be adjusted horizontally. Canadian regulations do not allow for horizontal headlight adjustment unless the vehicle is equipped with a built-in aiming device.

Safety Risk: Headlights that are not properly adjusted could cause reduced visibility or glare for oncoming drivers, and could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to close the aiming caps on the headlights to prevent horizontal adjustment. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA SUPRA 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the fuel tank may not have been welded properly. As a result, the fuel tank could leak.

Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel tank. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS 2021
  • VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS CROSS SPORT 2020 2021

Issue: Certain vehicles were built with tires that may have been cured too long. As a result, the sidewall could crack or the tread and belts could separate. This could lead to a sudden loss of air pressure and could cause a tire failure.
Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with certain Continental tires, with specific date codes and mold numbers.

Safety Risk: A tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the tires and replace the ones that have the DOT number and production mold number combinations identified by Continental. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET BOLT EV 2017 2018 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the high-voltage battery could overheat when it is charged to over 90% of its capacity. As a result, the battery could create smoke or heat, which can melt or damage the battery and nearby parts.

Safety Risk: A battery that overheats can create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to reprogram the hybrid propulsion control module 2 (HPCM2). This is an interim repair to limit the battery charge to 90%. Until this update is completed on your vehicle, General Motors recommends that you should enable “Hilltop Reserve” (for 2017-2018 models) or “Target Charge Level” (for 2019 models) using their vehicle’s infotainment centre. If you are not able to make these changes, you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or buildings until the software update is installed. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI VERACRUZ 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012

Issue: On certain vehicles, engine oil can leak from the valve cover onto the alternator. If this happens, the charging system could stop working and cause a warning light to turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with this problem, the engine could shut off while driving, and you may not be able to restart it. Note: This recall replaces R0090 (Transport Canada recall 2014-297). Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the wiring harness for the telematics control unit could get stuck between the brake light switch and the brake pedal. If this happens, the brake lights could remain on. Additionally, the vehicle could be started and could be shifted into gear without the need to press the brake pedal. It is also possible that if a driver exits the vehicle through the cargo compartment, the transmission may not shift to Park automatically. This could result in unintended vehicle movement.

Safety Risk: A vehicle that moves unexpectedly could create the risk of a crash. Brake lights that do not work properly could result in road users being confused about the driver’s intentions, and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install an additional cable tie on the wiring harness for the telematics control unit. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS 2021
  • VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS CROSS SPORT 2020 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, the steering knuckle(s) may have been damaged during production. As a result, the steering knuckle could fail without warning and cause a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could create a risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will contact owners directly and instruct you to stop driving your vehicle. Volkswagen will arrange for free towing to the nearest dealership. The steering knuckles will be inspected and replaced, if necessary. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image not to display or cause it to freeze. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear.

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the rearview camera software. Recall Details


  • ALFA ROMEO GIULIA 2020
  • ALFA ROMEO STELVIO 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles equipped with the carbon-ceramic material (CCM) brake option, the rear brake discs could fracture. If this happens, brake performance would be reduced.

Safety Risk: Reduced brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rear brake discs. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN 2018

Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the driver and/or front passenger seat belt. As a result, the seat belts could break in a crash.

Safety Risk: A seat belt that breaks in a crash could create an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the front seat belts. The driver and front passenger seat belt will be replaced, if necessary. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET TAHOE 2021

Issue: A small number of vehicles (2) may be missing the attachment bolts for one or both of the front seats. As a result, the seats could move in a crash.

Safety Risk: Seats that are not installed correctly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the attachments for both front seats. The attachment bolts will be installed if they are missing. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, the steering column may have been damaged during assembly. As a result, the steering column could move when the driver-front airbag inflates. This could cause reduced protection for the driver in a crash.

Safety Risk: Reduced occupant protection could lead to increased injuries in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the steering column. Recall Details

Issue: A small number of vehicles (2) may be missing the attachment bolts for one or both of the front seats. As a result, the seats could move in a crash.

Safety Risk: Doors that cannot be opened from the outside could increase the risk of injury after a crash. Hazard lights that do not work could make the vehicle less visible and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to apply protective tape to the wiring harness for the rear lights. Recall Details

Issue: On certain trucks, the side curtain airbag inflators could be defective. As a result, the driver and/or passenger side curtain airbag inflator(s) could fail. If this happens, the end cap from the inflator could be propelled into the vehicle and strike a person.

Safety Risk: A metal end cap that strikes a person could create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to replace one or both of the side curtain airbag(s). Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear reflex reflectors may not have been manufactured correctly. As a result, the rear reflectors may reflect less light than what is required by Canadian regulations.

Safety Risk: This small error does not affect vehicle safety.

Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has made changes to ensure that all new vehicles have fully compliant rear reflex reflectors. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 2016
  • MITSUBISHI RVR 2016

Issue: On certain vehicles, the parking brake operating shaft in the rear brake caliper could rust and become stuck. If this happens, the parking brake may not work properly. As a result, the brakes could drag or parking brake performance could be reduced. If the vehicle is not left in gear when it is parked, it could roll away. Note: This is an expansion of recall SR-18-002 (Transport Canada Recall No. 2018-053).

Safety Risk: A parked vehicle that rolls away could create the risk of an injury or a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mitsubishi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rear brake calipers. Recall Details


  • KIA STINGER 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire inflation pressure label lists the wrong cold tire pressure for the front tires (36 psi/250 kPa instead of 38 psi/260 kPa). Canadian regulations require that the recommended cold tire inflation pressure for the front, rear, and spare tires is listed on the label.

Safety Risk: This small error does not affect vehicle safety.

Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. Kia has made changes to ensure that all new vehicles have corrected tire inflation pressure on the label. Recall Details
