Canadian Passenger Vehicle Recalls for July 2020

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our July 2020 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. Issue: On certain vehicles, the flexible steel cable that attaches the seat belt to the outside of the front seats may weaken over time. As a result, the seat belt could detach.

Safety Risk: A seat belt that detaches in a crash could create an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front-outboard seat belt anchors. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD 2020

Issue: On certain trucks equipped with dual rear wheels and work truck trim level, the roof-mounted front clearance and identification lamps were not installed. Canadian regulations require these lamps on vehicles that are more than 2,032 mm (80“) wide.

Safety Risk: A vehicle without clearance and identification lamps could be less visible to other road users, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to install the missing clearance and identification lamps. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the software for the electronic stability control system (ESP) was not programmed correctly. As a result, the ESP system may not function as intended in certain driving situations.

Safety Risk: A stability control system that does not work properly could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the ESP system. Recall Details


  • KIA SOUL 2015 2016

Issue: On certain Soul EV models, the transmission could be damaged if the driver shifts to the “P” (Park) position before the vehicle has stopped moving. As a result, the vehicle could move when the shift lever is in the Park position and the parking brake is not used.

Safety Risk: Sudden and unexpected vehicle movement could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the Electronic Parking Brake. After the update, the parking brake will activate when the POWER button is turned OFF and the gear shift lever is in the Park position. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, the engine compartment seal may become loose over time and fall into the engine compartment. If this happens, the seal could contact a hot surface in the engine compartment.

Safety Risk: A rubber seal that falls onto a hot surface could cause a fire.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a retaining plate on the engine compartment seal. Recall Details


  • CHRYSLER TOWN & COUNTRY 2008 2009 2010

  • DODGE NITRO 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011

Issue: On certain vehicles, the emblem on the steering wheel could become loose. If this happens, the emblem or its retainers could become projectiles when the airbag inflates in a crash.

Safety Risk: Loose parts that are projected toward the occupants when an airbag deploys could increase the risk of an injury.

Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the airbag cover on the steering wheel. Recall Details

Issue: This recall is for certain replacement parts for use on Ram Heavy Duty trucks that were sold by dealer parts departments. This recall is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. If the outboard steering linkage jam nut is not welded according to the Dealer Service Instructions for safety recall V06, it could loosen and allow one end of the drag link to separate from the adjuster sleeve. A drag link separation can result in a loss of steering control. The following 4×4 style steering system parts are included in this recall: Drag Link Assembly (Part # 68369907AA) Jam Nut (Part # 06510749AA and Part # 06510750AA) Drag Link Outer (Part # 68111301AA) Drag Link Adjuster (Part #68111302AA) Drag Link Inner (Part # 68111304AA)

Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify potential owners using dealer sales records. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the drag link assembly. If the drag link is not welded but the jam nuts are properly tightened, the nuts will be welded to the adjuster sleeve. If the nuts are not properly tightened, the drag link assembly will be assessed for replacement. If a component or assembly is returned, FCA will reimburse the customer. Recall Details


  • KIA SEDONA 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the nut that attaches the battery cable to the alternator may be loose. This can result in electrical arcing (sparks).

Safety Risk: Electrical arcing could increase the risk of a fire.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect, and if necessary, tighten the alternator battery (B+) terminal nut. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019
  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV 2018 2019

Issue:  On certain vehicles, the seat belt buckle for the right seat in the second-row could be damaged when the seats are folded down. This can cause the seat belt buckle cover to come off. If this happens, the seat belt may not latch properly.

Safety Risk: A seat belt that does not latch properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mitsubishi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to modify the center seat belt buckle in the second seating row. A warning label will also be attached to the right seat base and additional instructions will be added to the owner’s manual. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA TUNDRA 2018 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the wire harness for the front turn signal lights was assembled incorrectly. As a result, the turn signals and hazard warning lights are not bright enough to meet Canadian regulations. This could cause other road users not to notice when the signal or hazard warning lights are turned on.

Safety Risk: Signal lights that are not bright enough could make the vehicle less visible to others, and could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions:  Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to modify the wire harness for the front turn signal lights. Recall Details


  • NISSAN LEAF 2020

Issue: Under certain conditions, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image to disappear on the display. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display while the transmission is in reverse gear.

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. 

Corrective Actions:  Nissan will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the head unit software. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the air conditioning drain hose might be installed incorrectly. This could allow water to leak inside the vehicle. If this happens, electrical components could short circuit. This could affect different parts, such as the airbag control unit, fuel pump and emergency call functions. It could also result in reduced engine power or cause the vehicle not to start. Note: If this issue is present in your vehicle, you might notice wet carpets in the driver or passenger footwell and fogged windows.

Safety Risk: A loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An airbag system that does not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. 

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect how the air conditioning hose is installed and correct it, if necessary. Recall Details


  • FORD TRANSIT 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, there may be a problem with the side curtain airbag inflators. As a result, the airbags may not inflate properly in a crash.

Safety Risk:  An airbag that does inflate properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the side curtain airbags. Recall Details

  • HONDA PASSPORT 2019 2020
  • HONDA PILOT 2019 2020 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause a delay or prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display within 2 seconds of shifting the transmission into reverse gear. 

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that is delayed or that does not display could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and include instructions on how to download and install a software update to correct this problem. Alternatively, an owner can take their vehicle to a dealer to have the software update installed. Recall Details


  • HONDA ODYSSEY 2018 2019 2020
  • HONDA PASSPORT 2019 2020
  • HONDA PILOT 2019 2020 2021

Issue: On certain vehicles, there is a programming error in the instrument panel control module. This could cause the instrument panel not display certain information, such as vehicle speed, engine oil pressure, and gear selector position. This can also cause the rearview camera image not to display.

Safety Risk: An instrument panel that does not work or a rearview camera image that does not display could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to reprogram the instrument panel control module. Recall Details


  • BMW X5 2019

Issue: On one X5 xDrive40i model, a bearing plate for the steering column shaft may not have been properly attached to the vehicle. As a result, the plate could loosen and cause a change in steering control.

Safety Risk: A loose steering column could affect steering control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: BMW will notify the owner by mail and instruct them to take the vehicle to a dealer to inspect the steering column shaft bearing plate. It will be repaired or replaced, as necessary. Recall Details


  • HONDA ODYSSEY 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, moisture could enter the rearview camera and cause it not to work properly. If this happens, the rearview image may be distorted or not display at all. Also, the camera image may not appear in certain bright light conditions.

Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display properly could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. 

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rearview camera. Recall Details


  • HONDA ODYSSEY 2018 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, moisture can freeze in the door handle cables for the rear sliding doors. If this happens, the door handle could stick in the open position. This can cause the door to not latch properly when it is closed. As a result, the door could open while driving.

Safety Risk: A door that opens while driving could create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the cables for the outer handles on the power sliding doors. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, there may be a problem with the side curtain airbag inflators. As a result, the airbags may not inflate properly in a crash.

Safety Risk: An airbag that does inflate properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the side curtain airbags. Recall Details


  • KIA TELLURIDE 2020

Issue: While towing a trailer, the trailer brake lights do not turn on when the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) slows the vehicle. Note: The vehicle’s brake lights continue to function normally.

Safety Risk: Brake lights that do not work could cause a following driver not to recognize that a vehicle ahead is braking. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install an additional wire harness to the main fuse box. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles that had the instrument cluster replaced, the seat belt warning may not work correctly. As a result, the seat belt warning light will not flash when the front seat belts are not buckled. Also, the warning chime will not sound. Canadian regulations require the light to blink and there be an audible warning when the seat belts are not buckled.

Safety Risk: A seat belt warning that does not work correctly may not remind people buckle their seat belt. Not wearing your seat belt can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the instrument cluster software. Recall Details
