Canadian Automotive Recalls for May 2020 – Passenger Vehicles

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our May 2020 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for May 2020 are as Follows

  • HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE 2016

Issue: On certain cars, the bolts that attach the driver-front airbag may not be tightened correctly. As a result, the airbag could become loose. If you continue to operate the vehicle with a loose airbag, it may detach from the steering wheel. 

Safety Risk: An airbag that is loose or detaches from the steering wheel could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to inspect the driver-front airbag mounting bolts and tighten them, if necessary. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ G CLASS 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the symbol on the rear door that indicates the child safety lock setting is incorrect. This could cause a person to set the child safety lock incorrectly. As a result, a child may be able to open a rear door from the inside of the vehicle. Alternatively, it may not be possible for a person to open the rear doors from the inside even if the doors are unlocked.

Safety Risk: If the child safety lock is not set correctly, a child may be able to open a rear door while with the vehicle is moving. Alternatively, the wrong setting could delay exiting the vehicle in an emergency. Both of these issues could increase the risk of injury.

Corrective Actions:Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to cover the incorrectly embossed lock symbol on the rear doors with the correct labeling. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2019
  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLC CLASS 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the airbag warning label(s) on the passenger side sun visor may be in an incorrect language.

Safety Risk:  Incorrect airbag warning labels could cause confusion. This could lead to an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions:  Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect, and if necessary, replace the sun visor and warning label(s). Recall Details


  • FORD EXPEDITION 2019
  • FORD MUSTANG 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, there is a problem with the warnings to tell a driver that the transmission is not in Park. When the ignition is turned off, with the driver door closed, the message and chime to warn that the transmission is not in Park are only active for 3 seconds. Instead, the chime should sound for 10 seconds and the message should display for 30 minutes. As a result, a driver could exit the vehicle without realizing that the transmission is not in Park. If this happens, the vehicle could roll away.

Safety Risk: Unintended vehicle movement could increase the risk of injury and/or a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford dealer to reprogram the instrument panel cluster. Recall Details


  • FORD EXPEDITION 2020

Issue: OOn certain vehicles, the Pre-Collision Assist System was not programmed correctly. As a result, the Forward Collision Warning, Dynamic Brake Support, and Automatic Emergency Braking features will not work. Note: This recall only affects vehicles with Ford Co-Pilot360, not those with the optional Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist technology.

Safety Risk: If the Pre-Collision Assist System does not work properly, it may not detect a frontal crash or reduce its severity. This could create an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the vehicle software. Recall Details


  • PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO 2019 2020
  • PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO COUPE 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the quick connector for the fuel line in the engine compartment can soften due to exposure to high engine temperatures. If this happens, there could be a fuel odour or fuel leak in the engine compartment.

Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire.

Corrective Actions: Porsche will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel line and quick connector. Recall Details

  • AUDI Q3 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the instrument panel may not have the correct split lines for the passenger airbag. As a result, the passenger airbag may not inflate properly in a crash. It could also cause small plastic parts to be projected inside the vehicle.

Safety Risk: WAn airbag that does not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions:The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. The serial number of the instrument panel will be checked, and the dealer will replace it, if necessary. Recall Details


  • AUDI A6 2020
  • AUDI A7 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the leather-covered instrument panel may not have the correct split lines for the passenger airbag. As a result, the passenger airbag may not inflate properly in a crash. It could also cause small plastic parts to be projected inside the vehicle.

Safety Risk: An airbag that does not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to replace the instrument panel. Recall Details


  • AUDI A8 2020
  • AUDI Q8 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, a transmission fluid pipe was not properly welded. As a result, the pipe may leak transmission fluid.

Safety Risk: A transmission fluid leak on the roadway could create a hazard for others by making the road slippery.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect and replace the defective transmission fluid pipe, if necessary. Recall Details


  • PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, a transmission fluid pipe was not properly welded. As a result, the pipe may leak transmission fluid.

Safety Risk: A transmission fluid leak on the roadway could create a hazard for others by making the road slippery.

Corrective Actions:  Porsche Cars Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect and replace the defective transmission fluid pipe, if necessary. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI LANCER 2008 2009 2010
  • MITSUBISHI LANCER SPORTBACK 2009 2010
  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013
  • MITSUBISHI RVR 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

Issue: On certain vehicles, road salt can corrode the front cross-member (subframe). As a result, a lower control arm could eventually detach from the cross-member. This could cause a loss of vehicle control.

Safety Risk: A loss of control can create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mitsubishi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the front cross-member (subframe). If no significant corrosion is found, the dealer will spray a sealing and anti-corrosion coating both inside and on the cross-member. If significant corrosion is found, the dealer will replace the cross-member. Recall Details


  • PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, a transmission fluid pipe was not properly welded. As a result, the pipe may leak transmission fluid. 

Safety Risk: A transmission fluid leak on the roadway could create a hazard for others by making the road slippery.

Corrective Actions: Porsche Cars Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect and replace the defective transmission fluid pipe, if necessary. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 2020
  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the right-side seat belt in the second-row seating may have an incorrect guide piece installed. As a result, the seat belt may not work properly in a crash. 

Safety Risk: A seat belt that does not work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. 

Corrective Actions:  Mitsubishi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the right-side seat belt in the second-row. If the wrong guide piece is installed, the seat belt will be replaced. Recall Details


  • BMW X2 2020
  • MINI 3 DOOR 2021
  • MINI 5 DOOR 2021
  • MINI CLUBMAN 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, there may be a problem with the rollover sensor in the airbag control unit. This can cause the airbag system not to detect a vehicle rollover. As a result, the curtain airbags may not deploy and other safety systems may not activate in a rollover. Note: When you start the vehicle, if there is a problem with the rollover sensor, the airbag warning light in the instrument panel will stay on. 

Safety Risk: Curtain airbags that do not deploy and safety systems that do not work properly could increase the risk of injury in a rollover crash.

Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, BMW recommends that you should not carry any passengers in your vehicle until the recall repairs are completed. BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the airbag control unit. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET TRAILBLAZER 2021

Issue: The compliance label on certain vehicles does not list all of the required information. The label does not provide the tire size or the cold tire pressure for the front and rear tires. Not having this information could lead you to overinflate or underinflate the tires. Using a vehicle with tires that are overinflated or underinflated could cause poor handling and/or a tire failure.

Safety Risk: Poor handling or a tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will mail a new compliance label to each owner. If you would like help to install the label, you can contact a General Motors dealer to have it installed free of charge. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET TRAX 2020

Issue: The compliance label on certain vehicles does not list all of the required information. The label does not provide the tire size or the cold tire pressure for the front and rear tires.   • HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012
  • HYUNDAI VERACRUZ 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012

Issue: Certain vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer wiring harness kit that could fail. Over time, this could result in a short circuit that can cause overheating of the control module. Note: This recall only affects Hyundai Genuine Accessory trailer wiring harness kits that were manufactured by third parties and sold in Canada. These kits may have been ordered at the time of a vehicle purchase, or purchased separately from a dealer as an aftermarket accessory.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. This risk remains even when the vehicle is parked.

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to inspect your vehicle to see if it has an affected trailer wiring harness installed. If it does, Hyundai will advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a redesigned trailer wiring harness. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. Recall Details


  • FORD MUSTANG 2020

Issue: On one car, the forward-facing camera may not be aligned correctly. As a result, different safety systems may not work properly. This includes the pre-collision assist, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system, driver alert, and auto high beam control.

Safety Risk: Safety systems that do not work properly could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify the owner and instruct them to take the car to a Ford dealer to realign the forward-facing camera. Recall Details


  • FORD TRANSIT CONNECT 2016 2017

Issue: On certain vehicles, the driver and/or front passenger seat belt pretensioner(s) may not work as designed in a crash.

Safety Risk: A seat belt pretensioner that does not work properly in a crash could cause an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford dealer to inspect the production date of the driver and front passenger seat belt assemblies. If the date is within the identified range, the dealer will replace the seat belt assembly. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, then engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump motor. Recall Details


  • NISSAN ALTIMA 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018

Issue: Over time, corrosion could cause the secondary hood latch to stick in the open position after it is used. If this happens, and the primary hood latch is released, the hood may open suddenly while driving.

Safety Risk: A hood that opens suddenly while driving could block the driver’s view and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Nissan will mail an interim notification to owners and provide instruction for how to properly maintain the hood latch. A second notice will be sent to owners once the corrective actions have been finalized. Recall Details
