Canadian Automotive Recalls for March 2020 – Passenger Vehicles

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our March 2020 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again.   • HYUNDAI SONATA 2013 2014

Issue: Over time, the fuel feed line to the high-pressure fuel pump could crack. If this happens, there could be a fuel odour or fuel leak in the engine compartment. 

Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire.

Corrective Action: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to complete the required repairs. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the clutch pressure plate could overheat and break. If this happens, there would be a loss of power to the wheels. A broken pressure plate may also crack or break the transmission case. This could cause debris to fall from the vehicle.

Safety Risk: A sudden of loss power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, debris from an overheated and fractured pressure plate could contact nearby parts and increase the risk of a fire. Parts that fall from the vehicle could create a road hazard for others, and increase the risk of injury.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, then engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
  • HYUNDAI SANTA FE XL 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019

Issue: Certain vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer wiring harness kit that could fail. Over time, moisture could enter the control module and cause a short circuit. Note: This recall only affects Hyundai Genuine Accessory trailer wiring harness kits that were manufactured by third parties and sold in Canada. These kits may have been ordered at the time of a vehicle purchase, or purchased separately from a dealer as an aftermarket accessory.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. This risk remains even when the vehicle is parked

Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to inspect your vehicle to see if it has an affected trailer wiring harness installed. If it does, Hyundai will advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a redesigned trailer wiring harness. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN ARTEON 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rod that connects the brake pedal to the brake booster may not be attached correctly. If the rod detaches, there would be an increase in brake pedal travel/force required to stop the vehicle. This can result in reduced brake performance.

Safety Risk: Reduced brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer inspect the brake booster input rod and electronic brake booster. Depending on the results of the inspection, the dealer may replace the input rod mounting and electronic brake booster, as required. Recall Details


  • FORD RANGER 2019

Issue: A defective blower motor may have been installed on some trucks that were repaired under recall 2019-512 (Ford recall 19S34). The replacement motor may have been built incorrectly and could short circuit. As a result, a second repair may be required. 

Safety Risk: A short circuit could cause overheating, melting, smoke, and create the risk of a fire.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to inspect the blower motor. It will be replaced if it was made during an identified time period. Recall Details

  • CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD 2020

Issue: On certain 2500 and 3500 series trucks, over time, the hood latch could fail. If this happens, the hood may open suddenly while driving.

Safety Risk:  If the hood opens while driving, it could block the driver’s view and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the hood assembly. Recall Details


  • INFINITI Q60 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear seat belts may be assembled incorrectly. As a result, the seat belts may not properly lock-up in certain types of crashes.

Safety Risk: A seat belt that does not work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the rear seat belt assemblies. They will be replaced as necessary. Recall Details

Issue: On certain vehicles, the automatic emergency braking system (AEB) may not apply the brakes automatically when it detects a possible collision. In addition, the system may not warn of a potential crash with a non-moving vehicle or object. Note: The regular brake system and all other functions in the vehicle are not affected by this problem.

Safety Risk: The AEB system may not provide driver warnings and apply the brakes automatically to help avoid a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the vehicle software. Recall Details


  • AUDI Q7 2017 2018 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the bolt that attaches the steering shaft to the steering gear may not be properly tightened. Over time, the bolt may loosen. If you continue to operate the vehicle, the bolt could detach completely and cause a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk: A loss of steering could create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions:  Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the steering shaft bolt and, if necessary, replace it. Recall Details


  • AUDI Q5 2020
  • AUDI SQ5 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear brake calipers may not have been built correctly. This could cause an increase in brake pedal travel and result in reduced brake performance.

Safety Risk: Reduced brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash. 

Corrective Actions: Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rear brake calipers. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles with factory-installed winter tires, the wheels may have been installed on the wrong side of the vehicle. As a result, the directional tires may be installed facing the wrong direction.

Safety Risk: A directional tire that is installed incorrectly may have reduced driving performance and traction. Additionally, the tire’s grip on wet roads or in snow may be affected. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the running direction of the tires. If the tires are facing the wrong direction, they will be reinstalled correctly. The affected tires will be replaced if the tread wear is uneven. Recall Details


  • AUDI A6 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles built with a 2.0 TFSI engine, moisture can enter the starter generator and cause a short circuit.

Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk.

Corrective Actions:  The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the starter generator. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA HIGHLANDER 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the engine stop-start system may not work properly and could cause the engine to stall while driving. If this happens, a warning chime will sound and multiple warning lights would turn on to let the driver know that the engine has stopped.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the engine control unit (ECU) software. Recall Details


  • BMW 3 SERIES 2020
  • BMW 8 SERIES 2020
  • BMW X3 2020
  • BMW X4 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, there may be a problem with the front seat belt buckle sensors. This could cause the seat belt warnings to turn on, even if the front seat belts are buckled. If the driver ignores these warnings, the seat belt pretensioner and airbag systems may not function properly.

Safety Risk: A seat belt pretensioner or airbag system that does not work properly in a crash could increase the risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to check the front seat belt buckles and replace them, if necessary. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ S CLASS 2018 2019
  • MERCEDES-BENZ S CLASS COUPE 2018 2019

Issue: On certain S 560 and Maybach S 560 models, the plugs used to close oil ports on the engine could fail. If this happens, oil can leak from the engine. If the engine oil level drops, a red warning message would display in the instrument cluster. If a driver continues to operate the vehicle, the engine could run out of oil and fail.

Safety Risk: An oil leak on the road surface could become a hazard for other road users. An engine that fails would result in a sudden loss of engine power. Both of these conditions could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the closure plugs. You should avoid sudden acceleration and driving the vehicle at high engine speeds until the recall repairs are completed. If you detect any of the warnings listed, you should contact a dealership to have your vehicle inspected. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLE CLASS 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear crossmember may not have been properly welded. As a result, when the rear towing eye is used, the welds could break and the rear crossmember could detach from the vehicle.

Safety Risk: A rear crossmember that detaches from the vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people. It could also increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rear crossmember. Mercedes-Benz advises owners not to use the rear towing eye until the recall repairs are completed. Recall Details


  • BMW 3 SERIES 2014 2015

Issue: On certain 328d xDrive models, engine vibrations could damage the rear driveshaft joint. Over time, this could cause the driveshaft to separate, which would result in a loss of power to the rear wheels. If the driveshaft separates, the vehicle could also move when the transmission is in Park, and the parking brake is not used.

Safety Risk: A loss of power to the rear wheels could increase the risk of a crash. A parked vehicle that rolls away could also increase the risk of an injury or a crash.

Corrective Actions:BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the rear driveshaft constant-velocity joint. Dealers will also inspect the transfer case, and if necessary, replace it. Note: BMW recommends that you should use the parking brake, at all times, when you park the vehicle. This will minimize the risk of the vehicle rolling away. Recall Details


  • FORD FUSION 2014 2015

Issue: This recall is for a small number of cars that were sold in United States and imported to Canada. On these vehicles, the door latches could crack and fail due to exposure to high ambient temperatures. If this happens, a door may not properly latch when it is closed. As a result, the door could open while driving.

Safety Risk: A door that opens while driving could create a risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to replace the side door latches. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET BOLT EV 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear doors may unlatch suddenly due to a damaged cable caused by repeated rear window movement. As a result of this damage, a rear door could open while driving when the window is lowered. A damaged cable may also cause the inside door handle not to work.

Safety Risk: A door that opens while the vehicle is moving could create an increased risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the inside door handle cable in both rear doors. Note: Until the recall repairs are completed, you can prevent the chance of a door opening while driving by turning on the child lock feature in the rear doors. Recall Details


  • DODGE DURANGO 2019
  • JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front differential pinion gears were not manufactured correctly. As a result, the pinion gears could wear excessively and cause a loss of power to the wheels and could also cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly when the vehicle’s transmission is in the parked position. 

Safety Risk: A vehicle that loses power to the wheels or move unexpectedly could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: FCA will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front differential. Recall Details


  • INFINITI QX56 2011 2012
  • NISSAN ARMADA 2013 2014 2015
  • NISSAN NV 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017
  • NISSAN TITAN 2013 2014 2015

Issue:  On certain vehicles, the driver-front airbag inflator could be defective. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. It could also cause the inflator to rupture. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward the occupants or cause damage to the airbag and prevent it from inflating properly.

Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash where the airbag deploys, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury or death.

Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver-front airbag inflator or airbag module. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2019

Issue: Certain vehicles were delivered with an operator’s manual that has incorrect information about the automatic parking function (Auto-P). Specifically, the transmission does not automatically shift to Park when the driver unbuckles their seat belt or leaves their seat while the vehicle is stationary or moving at very low speed. If the driver relies on the Auto-P feature in these situations, the vehicle could keep moving or roll away.

Safety Risk: Sudden and unexpected movement of the vehicle could create a risk of injury or a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mazda Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. Dealers will replace the sealing gasket and add an anti-corrosion material inside the headlights, as necessary. Dealers may also replace the headlight units if they have failed due to this problem.   • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front brake hoses may contact the fender liners. This could cause damage to the hoses that can result in a brake fluid leak. If this happens, brake performance could be reduced. Note: A brake fluid leak can cause the low brake fluid warning to turn on.

Safety Risk: Reduced brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the front brake hoses. If the hoses are damaged, they will be replaced. Additionally, the front fenders liners will be cut to prevent future damage. Recall Details
