Canadian Automotive Recalls for October 2018 – Passenger Vehicles

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our October, 2018 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for October, 2018 are as Follows

  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLC CLASS 2016 2017 2018

On certain vehicles, the seatbelt latch plate in the second seating row outboard seats might retract into the area between the C-pillar paneling and the rear side paneling. This could hinder the access to the seatbelt latch plate for the outboard seat occupants. If a rear seat passenger does not fasten the seatbelt, the risk of injury in the event of a crash could increase.

Correction:  Dealers will add a buffer element to the C-pillar paneling. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-136. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ CLA CLASS 2018

On certain cars, the airbag system may not turn off the airbag when a child seat is used in the front passenger seat. In the event of a crash with an airbag deployment, this could create a risk of injury to a child.

Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger seat cushion. Note: Child seats should not be used in the front passenger seat until the recall is completed. Recall Details

On certain vehicles, the footwell module (FRM3) may become contaminated by a mixture of salt and moisture which could lead to corrosion over time. This could cause a short circuit, resulting in overheating of the module that could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction:  TBD. Note: Owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors until the recall repairs have been completed. Recall Details


  • SUZUKI GRAND VITARA 2006 2007

On certain cars, the airbag system may not turn off the airbag when an infant or child is seated in the front passenger seat. In the event of a crash with an airbag dOn certain vehicles, the tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt which operates the power steering pump and air conditioner compressor (if equipped) has an outer portion that is made of plastic. Repeated heat stress can cause the plastic material to deteriorate and pieces of the pulley can break off. Broken pieces of the pulley can get caught between the pulley and the drive belt, causing the drive belt to come off and resulting in the driver needing increased effort to steer the vehicle. This situation could result in a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. 

Correction: Dealers will replace the power steering pump drive belt tension adjuster pulley. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2010-197. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA AVALON 2019
  • TOYOTA SEQUOIA 2018 2019
  • TOYOTA TUNDRA 2018 2019

Certain vehicles may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 – Occupant Protection in Frontal Impacts and CMVSS 214 – Side Impact Protection. The airbag (SRS) control unit may incorrectly detect a fault in one or more of the front or side airbag impact sensors during vehicle start up. In the event of a crash where airbag deployment is required, this may result in the airbags not deploying as designed, increasing the risk of injury. Upon detection of a fault in the airbag system, multiple warning lights would activate, a warning buzzer would sound, and a warning message would display on the instrument panel display.

Correction: Dealers will update the airbag control unit software. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2018-100. Vehicles repaired as part of the previous recall will require re-inspection and repair. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
  • TOYOTA PRIUS V 2012 2013 2014

On certain vehicles, the Intelligent Power Module (IPM), which is part of the hybrid drive system, could become damaged under certain driving conditions. This could cause various warning lights to illuminate on the instrument panel of the vehicle and cause a reduction or loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will update motor/generator and hybrid control ECU software and affect repairs as necessary. Recall Details

  • FORD GT 2017 2018

On certain vehicles, hydraulic fluid could leak from the rear wing control system and onto the exhaust. A hydraulic fluid leak onto a hot exhaust surface could increase the risk of a fire, causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will update the Vehicle Dynamics Control Module with new software which would eliminate the possibility of excessive pressure in the rear wing valve block assembly. Vehicles that were not built with a hydraulic check valve and filter will be fitted with the hardware, along with hydraulic pump O-rings, if needed. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA CH-R 2019

On certain vehicles, one or more of the rear axle bearing bolts may not have been properly tightened during assembly. This could cause the bolt(s) to become loose and eventually detach, which could damage the rear brakes or could cause the rear wheel(s) to detach. This may result in a reduction in brake performance and a loss of vehicle stability, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the rear axle hub bearing bolts. If a bolt is found to be loose or detached, the dealer will replace the rear axle hub bearing assembly and rear axle carrier sub-assembly. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI IONIQ 2017 2018

On certain Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) vehicles, the main relay contacts in the Power Relay Assembly located underneath the rear seat may have an inadequate connection. This could increase electrical resistance and generate heat, increasing the risk of fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the Power Relay Assembly for signs of thermal damage. If no thermal damage is found, the main relay will be replaced. If signs of thermal damage exist, the Power Relay Assembly will be replaced. Note: This problem may cause the Illumination of the HEV warning light while driving and/or an inability to start the vehicle. Recall Details


  • BMW 3 SERIES 2017
  • BMW 4 SERIES 2016 2017

On certain M3 and M4 models, a problem with the driveshaft flange may cause its disconnection. This could result in a loss of propulsion, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will replace the driveshaft. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2018
  • MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS 2018

On certain vehicles, an incorrect cover for the starter battery may have been installed and may not fully cover the battery (positive) electrical cable. In the event of a crash, components could come in to contact with the cable, creating a short circuit, and increasing the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Additionally, if on-board electrical system voltage is lost, post-crash functions (e.g. emergency door unlocking, activation of hazard warning lamps after crash) might not be available. However, the unlocking and opening of the doors from inside the vehicle would not be affected.

Correction: Dealers will install a new battery cover with the correct dimensions to cover the electrical cable. Recall Details


  • BMW X5 2019

On certain vehicles, the Body Domain Controller (BDC) may have been manufactured with defective electrical parts. This could result in a short circuit, causing the BDC to overheat, which could cause smoke and lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the BDC. Recall Details


  • JEEP RENEGADE 2017

On certain 4×2 flex fuel (E85) vehicles equipped with a 2.4 L engine, a problem with the fuel pump could cause a loss of fuel pressure under certain operating conditions. This may lead to an engine stall, resulting in a sudden loss of motive power, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the fuel pump with an updated part. Recall Details


  • CHRYSLER PACIFICA 2017 2018

On certain Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), during auto start, the engine may experience a mis-synchronization, which could cause overheating of the catalytic converter. This could potentially lead to a vehicle fire and/or a loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Dealers will update the power control module (PCM) software to detect and correct the engine mis-synchronization and will inspect the catalytic converter and replace it if necessary. Recall Details


  • JEEP CHEROKEE 2019

On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.4 L engine, a problem with the transmission controller programming may cause the engine to stall while driving. This could result in a loss of motive power and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will update the transmission controller with a new calibration. Recall Details


  • FORD FOCUS 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018

On certain vehicles, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may stick open and cause excessive vacuum in the fuel system that could deform the fuel tank. If this were to occur, it could cause: a malfunction indicator light (MIL) to illuminate, erratic readings on the fuel gauge, and/or the engine may stall. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software and replace the CPV as necessary. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. Note: In the interim, owners are advised to maintain at least 1/2 tank of fuel until the recall repair is performed. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA AVALON 2012

On certain vehicles that had the driver’s and/or front passenger’s seat belt buckle replaced, a switch within the replacement buckle may incorrectly signal that the seat belt is always buckled. In the event of a crash, this may cause the airbag system not work as designed, and could increase the risk of injury to the occupant(s).

Correction: Dealers will inspect the signal from the seat belt switch and replace the inner seat belt assembly as needed. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2500 2018
  • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 3500 2018

On certain vehicles, an incorrect lever may have been installed on the right (passenger) side door locks. In some cases, it may not be possible to open the door from the inside or the outside of the vehicle, which could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Correction: Dealers will inspect, and replace the affected locks if necessary. Note: This condition would not affect the door locks on left side of the vehicle. Recall Details


  • MAZDA MAZDA6 2004 2006 2007 2008
  • MAZDA MAZDASPEED6 2006 2007
  • MAZDA MPV 2004 2005 2006

On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 2015-624 (Mazda Recall 9015L), 2016-259 (Mazda Recall 9416E) and 2017-011 (Mazda Recall 0617A). Vehicles repaired under the previous recalls do not require repair under this recall. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2019

On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

Correction: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2016-050 (Mazda Recall 9116A). Vehicles repaired under the previous recall require a final repair under this recall, as the previous recall remedy was an interim repair. Interim repair parts must be replaced with final repair parts. Recall Details


  • MAZDA B SERIES 2004 2005 2006

On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: This recall supersedes recall 2015-246 (Mazda Recall 8315F). Vehicles repaired under the previous recall require a final repair under this recall, as the previous recall remedy was an interim repair. Interim repair parts must be replaced with final repair parts. Recall Details


  • MAZDA CX-7 2010 2011 2012
  • MAZDA CX-9 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Additional Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-030. Recall Details


  • MAZDA RX-8 2010 2011

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. 

Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Additional Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-038. Recall Details

On certain vehicles, water may drain from the windshield cowl area onto the front wiper link ball joint. Over time, this could result in corrosion and/or wear to the joint, which could result in the separation of the wiper link ball. If separation were to occur, the windshield wipers could become inoperative, which could limit the driver’s visibility under certain operating conditions which may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Dealers will replace the wiper link rod with a countermeasure one, and will replace the wiper motor crank arm with a new one. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 2014 2015

On certain vehicles, a wiring connector located under the driver’s side carpet may become contaminated by salt water and corrode over time. This could cause a short-circuit that may cause the connector to overheat and melt and potentially lead to a fire if combustible objects are nearby. A vehicle fire could result in injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will relocate and replace the wiring connector terminal to a higher position and replace the rear display harness with a new one. Recall Details


  • ACURA NSX 2017 2018

Certain vehicles may have been built with a defective fuel tank crossover pipe connecting the left and right tanks. Over time, the crossover pipe could separate and cause a fuel leak which, in the presence of an ignition source, could create the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: The company will replace affected fuel tanks. Recall Details

On certain vehicles, the cooler for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module may develop an internal leak and coolant could mix with diesel engine soot/sediment. In rare circumstances, this condition could result in smouldering particles and lead to the melting of the intake manifold, increasing the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Dealers will inspect the EGR cooler, and if necessary, replace it. If it is determined that the EGR cooler has leaked internally, the intake manifold will also be replaced. The EGR pipe connecting the cooler to the manifold will be cleaned. Note: An operator may be alerted to this condition by one or more of the following symptoms: A warning symbol in the instrument cluster displaying a loss of engine coolant, a reduction in engine power, an unpleasant odour (exhaust gas), an unusual noise from the engine compartment, and/or smoke from the engine compartment.   • JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2018

On certain Grand Cherokee SRT and Trackhawk models, the driver’s floor mat could interfere with the accelerator pedal. If the pedal becomes stuck on the floor mat, an unintended acceleration event could occur, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Dealers will inspect the driver’s floor mat and install a revised version as required. Recall Details


  • ISUZU FTR 2018 2019

On certain F-Series cab-forward trucks, there may be insufficient warning to the operator when the locking lever that secures the cab is left unlatched after servicing or maintenance. If a driver does not ensure the cab is properly latched before driving, the cab may tilt unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Isuzu will remind owners of the need to secure the cab locking lever and will provide further measures, including additional warning features and an additional label and updates to the owner’s manuals. Recall Details


  • KIA STINGER 2018

On certain vehicles, the front wiring harness could come in contact with a sharp metal opening on the left inner fender and become damaged. This could result in an electrical short-circuit and create the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the front wiring harness for damage. If no damage is found, the dealer will install a plug/cover to the opening on the left inner fender. If damage is found, the front wiring harness will be replaced and a plug/cover will be installed to cover the opening on the left inner fender. Recall Details


  • MAZDA MAZDA6 2010 2011 2012 2013

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. 

Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Additional Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-040. Recall Details
