Canadian Automotive Recalls for June 2020 – Passenger Vehicles

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our June 2020 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. Canadian Passenger Vehilcle Recalls

The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for June 2020 are as Follows

  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLE CLASS 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the owner’s manual does not include specific information about the adjustment of the head restraints for the third-row seats. Canadian regulations require this information be included in the owner’s manual.

Safety Risk:  This error is unlikely to affect safety

Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. This notice is for information only. The company will provide owners with a supplementary owner’s manual booklet with information about how to adjust the head restraints for the third-row seats. The company has made changes to ensure that all new owner’s manuals contain this information. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with front swivel-seats, the wiring harness under the seat may not be properly secured. As a result, the wiring harness could be damaged when the seat is moved. If this happens, the side airbag may not work properly in a crash. It could also cause the side airbag to deploy suddenly without a crash. Note: If the wiring to the side airbag is damaged, the SRS light will stay on in the instrument cluster.

Safety Risk: An airbag that does not work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the routing of the seat wiring harness. The dealer will add clips or cable ties to properly secure the wiring harness to the seat, if necessary. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD 2020
  • GMC SIERRA HD 2020

Issue: On certain 2500 and 3500 series trucks, over time, the hood latch could fail. If this happens, the hood may open suddenly while driving. Note: This recall is for trucks that may have been serviced with a replacement hood assembly containing the same defect as that in Transport Canada recall no. 2020-097.

Safety Risk: If the hood opens while driving, it could block the driver’s view and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions:  General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the hood assembly. For hoods sold as replacement parts, dealers will contact the customers directly with instructions for hood replacement. Recall Details


  • FORD F-150 2014 2015 2016 2017

Issue: On certain trucks, brake fluid could leak from the brake master cylinder front wheel circuit into the brake booster. If this happens, the driver may experience increased brake pedal travel and increased pedal effort. This can cause reduced front brake performance. Full braking function remains in the rear wheel circuit. Note: Depending on the amount of brake fluid loss, the driver may hear a warning chime and see a red brake warning indicator in the instrument cluster. 

Safety Risk: Reduced front brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to replace the brake master cylinder. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ AMG GT 2020
  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2020
  • MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS 2020
  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLC CLASS 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the lock that secures the backrest on the left-rear seat may be defective. As a result, cargo in the trunk could load the backrest in a crash and cause the lock to fail. If this happens, the seat backrest could tilt forward. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with rear seat backrests that can be unlocked electronically.

Safety Risk:  A backrest that tilts forward in a crash could increase the risk of injury. 

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the backrest lock on the left-rear seat. As a precautionary measure, you should avoid loading heavy items in the trunk until the recall repairs are completed. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ METRIS 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, the propeller shaft may not be properly attached to the intermediate bearing. As a result, the propeller shaft joint could wear out. This could cause vibrations that the airbag (SRS) control unit interprets as a crash and deploy the front airbags.

Safety Risk:  A sudden deployment of the front airbags without a crash could create a risk of injury. This could also startle the driver, which may lead to a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the propeller shaft and replace it, if necessary. Recall Details

  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLE CLASS 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the shock absorbers may wear out prematurely due to a manufacturing defect. Worn out shock absorbers may affect vehicle handling and stability. Note: This recall only affects vehicles with the optional electronic suspension.

Safety Risk: Poor vehicle handling and stability could increase the risk of a crash. 

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the shock absorbers. Recall Details


  • CHRYSLER PACIFICA 2017 2018 2019 2020

Issue: On certain Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (“PHEV”), there could be a problem with the connection at the 12-volt battery isolator post. As a result, the connection could build a high-resistance and overheat. Note: This connection is located on the floor behind the driver’s seat.

Safety Risk: A high-resistance connection could cause a fire. This can happen even if the vehicle is parked.

Corrective Actions: FCA will notify owners by mail. The final repairs for this recall are under development. In the interim, FCA will advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the 12-volt battery isolator post. If the connection is damaged, a loaner vehicle will be provided. FCA will send you a second letter once the final repairs are available. Note: FCA advises you to take the following precautions until the final repairs are completed: – Do not park your vehicle inside of a building or structure, or near other vehicles. – Keep liquids out of the backseat area, including things like beverages, wet items, umbrellas, or bottled liquids that may leak.   • AUDI A6 2019 2020
  • AUDI A7 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire information label includes the specifications and inflation pressure for a spare tire. As the vehicles are not equipped with a spare tire, the label should indicate ‘none’. Canadian regulations require a company to provide information about the inflation pressures for tires that a vehicles equipped with.

Safety Risk: This small error does not affect vehicle safety.

Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has made changes to ensure that all new vehicles have the correct information printed on the tire information label. Recall Details


  • MAZDA CX-30 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive, a hose that connects the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system to the fuel tank may not have been installed correctly. This could cause fuel to flow directly into the EVAP system when the fuel tank is filled completely. As a result, fuel may leak through the charcoal canister vent. A charcoal canister that is filled with fuel could also cause the engine to stall. Note: This problem could cause the malfunction indicator light (MIL) to turn on in the instrument cluster and/or the active driving display.

Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. An engine that stalls while driving could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions:  Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the EVAP hose connection inside the fuel tank and reconnect it, if necessary. If the hose is found disconnected, the charcoal canister will also be replaced. You should avoid completely filling the fuel tank until the recall repairs are completed. Recall Details


  • MAZDA CX-30 2020
  • MAZDA MAZDA3 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front brake caliper mounting bolts may not be properly tightened. This could cause the bolts to loosen, which may result in reduced brake effectiveness. If the bolts fall out, the caliper could also come in contact with the wheel rim and cause a loss of vehicle control

Safety Risk: Reduced brake effectiveness could cause an increase in stopping distance and create the risk of a crash. A loss of vehicle control could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to check the tightening torque of the front brake caliper mounting bolts. If a bolt is missing, the caliper and remaining bolt will be replaced. Recall Details


  • JEEP CHEROKEE 2014 2015 2016 2017

Issue: On certain vehicles with a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU), the input splines on the front differential may wear and fail. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. In addition, the PARK position may not hold the vehicle in place. This could allow the vehicle to move unexpectedly when parked.

Safety Risk: A vehicle that loses power to the wheels or moves unexpectedly could increase the risk of a crash. 

Corrective Actions: FCA will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the power transfer unit. This update will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheels if the input splines fail. It will also prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly when transmission is in PARK by activating the parking brake. Recall Details


  • BMW 3 SERIES 2019 2020
  • BMW Z4 2019

Issue: On certain vehicles, high temperatures and excessive vibration could cause damage to the steering tie rods. If this happens, the tie rods could break. This could result in a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could create a risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the steering tie rods. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2020
  • VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front brake caliper mounting bolts may not be properly tightened. This could cause the bolts to loosen, which may result in reduced brake effectiveness.

Safety Risk: Reduced brake effectiveness could cause an increase in stopping distance and create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front brake caliper mounting bolts. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2019 2020
  • MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS 2019 2020
  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLC CLASS 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the screws that attach the oil lines to the turbocharger may not have been properly tightened. If the screws are not properly tightened, oil could leak onto hot surfaces in the engine bay.

Safety Risk: Engine oil that leaks onto a hot surface could cause a fire.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect and repair the turbocharger oil feed and return line mounting, as necessary. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLA CLASS 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the bolts on the rear axle may not have been tightened correctly. As a result, the wheel alignment could change while driving. This could lead to poor vehicle handling. Note: This problem may cause a knocking sound from the rear of the vehicle while driving.

Safety Risk: Poor vehicle handling could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the bolts on the rear axle and tighten them, if necessary. Recall Details


  • FORD EXPEDITION 2020
  • LINCOLN NAVIGATOR 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the bracket that attaches the head restraint to the second-row left seat may not have been fully welded. As a result, the head restraint could move in a crash.

Safety Risk:  A head restraint that does not remain in place in a crash could create a increase the risk of injury.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to inspect and replace the second-row seat structure, if necessary. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA RAV4 2019 2020

Issue: On certain vehicles, the cover of the electric power steering (EPS) gearbox may not be properly attached. As a result, water can enter the gearbox and corrode internal components. Under certain conditions, this can result in a loss of power steering assist.

Safety Risk: A loss of power steering assist may result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a Toyota dealer to replace the electric power steering gear assembly. Recall Details


  • CADILLAC ATS 2013 2014 2015 2016
  • CADILLAC CTS 2014 2015 2016
  • CHEVROLET CAMARO 2016 2017

Issue: On certain vehicles, the bolts that attach the electric power steering assist motor to the steering gear may corrode and break. This could cause a loss of power steering assist.

Safety Risk: A loss of power steering assist may result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the bolts that attach the electric power steering motor and apply a protective wax coating. If the bolts cannot be removed due to corrosion, the steering gear will be replaced. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA PRIUS 2014 2015
  • TOYOTA PRIUS V 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018

Issue:  The Intelligent Power Module (IPM), which is part of the hybrid drive system, could become damaged under certain driving conditions. This could cause various warnings to appear on the instrument panel and cause the hybrid system to shut down. If this happens, there can be a loss of power to the wheels.

Safety Risk: A loss of power to the wheels could create the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the hybrid system. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN GTI 2018

Issue: One vehicle was produced with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the compliance label that does not match the VIN on the vehicle.

Safety Risk: Canadian regulations require each vehicle to have a unique VIN that may be found in multiplane places on the vehicle. 

Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify the owner by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to install a new compliance label. Recall Details


  • FORD F-250 2020
  • FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY 2020
  • FORD F-350 2020
  • FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY 2020

Issue: On a small number of trucks, the transmission torque converter damper plate may be defective and could break. If this happens, the engine could stall and there may be an increase in brake pedal force required to stop the truck.

Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. A sudden increase in brake pedal force could lead to an increase in stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions: Ford will notify owners and instruct you to take your truck to a Ford dealer to replace the automatic transmission. Recall Details


  • RAM PROMASTER 2020

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, there may be a problem with the side curtain airbag inflators. As a result, the airbags may not inflate properly in a crash. 

Safety Risk:  An airbag that does inflate properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the side curtain airbags. Recall Details
