No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our January and February 2018 summary of passenger vehicle recall notices. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again.   • TESLA MODEL S (2013)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

Correction:  Service centers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Recall Details


  • Hyundai Elantra (2013 2014)

On certain vehicles, the brake pedal stopper pad material could deteriorate over time and allow the stop lamp switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. This could result in the stop lamps illuminating continuously, which would result in following road users being unaware of the driver’s intentions. Additionally, it could result in activation of the engine management system’s brake pedal override feature, the illumination of the traction control warning lamp, and/or the ability to move the shift lever without depressing the brake pedal, which could result in unintended vehicle movement. These conditions could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA MATRIX (2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008)
  • TOYOTA YARIS (2010 2011 2012)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

Correction:  Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag assembly. Recall Details

Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Matrix model vehicles may have had the original front passenger airbag inflator replaced as a “like-for-like” replacement under a previous recall as a temporary remedy while evaluating a permanent remedy. These vehicles will receive the permanent remedy passenger airbag assembly under this recall.


  • BMW X5 (2009)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

Correction: Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will either replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator, or replace the airbag assembly.   • PONTIAC VIBE (2009 2010)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

Correction: Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will either replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator, or replace the airbag assembly. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal.   • FORD RANGER (2006)

Note: A subset of 2006 Rangers (vehicles built from August 5, 2005 through December 15, 2005) may pose a higher risk of airbag rupture than other recalled airbags. These vehicles are being recalled separately due to high risk under campaign 18S02. Click here to determine if your vehicle is affected. Vehicles subject to 18S02 should not be driven – Contact a Ford dealer immediately to have the vehicle repaired.

On certain vehicles, the driver and/or passenger airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.

Correction: Dealers will replace both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators. Recall Details


  • CHRYSLER PACIFICA (2017)

Certain vehicles equipped with the 3.6L engine may experience an engine stall due to a loss of crankshaft position sensor synchronization. This could result in a loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will update the engine control software. Recall Details


  • JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE (2018)

Certain vehicles may fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 206 – Door Lock and Door Retention Components. The left (driver’s side) door locks may indicate a locked position, even when the door is not locked, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the left door locks, and replace them as necessary. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ AMG-GTG (2018)

On certain vehicles, the seatbelt may bind within the seatbelt guidance loop. If the seatbelt were to bind, a slack in the seatbelt may develop, which in the event of a crash, may not restrain the occupant as intended, and increase the risk of injury.

Correction: Dealers will remove the spacer disc in the seat belt guidance loop and add an additional sliding component to guide the belt. Recall Details


  • NISSAN VERSA NOTE (2018)

On certain vehicles, the inflator diffuser installed in certain side curtain air bag modules may not have been manufactured correctly. If the vehicle were involved in a crash that warranted side curtain airbag deployment, this could potentially lead to the diffuser detaching. If the diffuser were to detach, it could become a projectile in the occupant compartment, which could result in the side curtain airbag to not fully inflate. Both of these conditions could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Correction: Dealers will replace the side curtain air bag modules. Recall Details


  • MAZDA CX-7, CX-9 (2007 2008 2009)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

  • HYUNDAI AZERA (2006 2007 2008 2009)
  • HYUNDAI SONATA (2006)

On certain vehicles equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), the ABS module remains powered on when the vehicle is turned off. If moisture were to enter the module, over time, an electrical short could occur, which could increase the risk of an underhood fire causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will install a relay in the vehicle’s main junction box to ensure the ABS module is powered off upon the vehicle being turned off. Recall Details

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. Certain vehicles may have been manufactured with contaminated brake fluid reducing the braking performance of the vehicle. This could result in longer stopping distances, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the brake system and replace it as necessary. Recall Details


  • FORD EXPEDITION (2018)

Certain vehicles may fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 118 – Power-Operated Window, Partition and Roof Panel Systems. The window electronic control module in the left and/or right second row rear door may have been manufactured incorrectly. As a result, the left and/or right second row power operated window may not automatically reverse when it encounters an obstruction while the window is closing, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard, and could increase the risk of injury.

  • BMW X3 (2018)

On certain vehicles, the backrest adjustment mechanism (recliner) of the front seats may not have been welded correctly during the manufacturing process. As a result, the welds could crack and lead to a failure of the latch mechanism. This could cause the seats to fold forward or rearward in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupants.

Correction: Dealers will replace the backrest frame of the front seats. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI LANCER,LANCER SPORTBACK  (2009 2010 2011 2012)
  • MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER (2008 2009 2010 2011 2012)
  • MITSUBISHI RVR (2011 2012)

On certain vehicles, insufficient rust prevention to the parking brake shaft and insufficient sealing performance of the rear brake caliper boot could allow water to penetrate inside these components causing corrosion. As a result, the parking brake shaft may become stuck causing brake dragging and/or decreased parking brake performance. Additionally, the automatic adjuster for the brake pad clearance of the rear brake caliper with the built-in parking brake may not work correctly. These conditions could lead to a vehicle rollaway, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear brakes as necessary. Recall Details

On certain vehicles, the sunroof may not have been bonded properly and could separate from the vehicle. This could pose a risk to other road users, increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property.

  • PONTIAC VIBE (2010)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

  • AUDI Q5 (2009 2010 2011 2012)

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

Correction: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

Additional Note: For the Audi A5 and S5 models, this campaign only affects the Cabriolet versions of these models.

Also to Note: This recall supersedes the Audi brand vehicles subject to recall 2016-064 (Audi Recall 69N1). Audi brand vehicles completed under the previous 2016-064 recall require repair under this recall, as the previous recall remedy was an interim repair.   • LEXUS NX (2015 2016)
  • LEXUS RX (2016)
  • TOYOTA PRIUS (2016)

On certain vehicles, the airbag system pressure sensors and/or acceleration sensors used to detect vehicle impact may contain manufacturing defects. As a result, the airbag warning light may illuminate and the side/curtain shield airbags and/or front airbags may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the defective sensors as necessary. Note: This will not affect the front airbags of the Prius model. Recall Details


  • NISSAN JUKE (2015 2016 2017)

On certain vehicles, the brake master cylinder may contain a defect which could allow brake fluid to leak from the master cylinder into the brake booster. This would affect brake system function, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will install a revised master cylinder. Note: Only Juke Nismo RS vehicles are affected. Recall Details


  • RAM 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500 (2017, 2018)

On certain vehicles equipped with a steering column gear shifter, the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) may become inoperative. This could allow the steering column gear shifter lever to be shifted out of the PARK (P) position without depressing the service brake pedal or having the key in the ignition, which could result in unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

  • DODGE CARAVAN (2017)
  • JEEP WRANGLER (2017)

On certain vehicles, the airbag system pressure sensors and/or acceleration sensors used to detect vehicle impact may contain manufacturing defects. As a result, the airbag warning light may illuminate and the side/curtain shield airbags and/or front airbags may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Additional Note: This recall for this subset of vehicles which supersedes recall 2015-246 (Mazda Recall 8315F). Vehicles completed under the previous 2015-246 recall require repair under this recall, as the previous recall remedy was an interim repair.   • MAZDA B-SERIES (2006)

Note: A subset of 2006 B-Series (vehicles built from August 18, 2005 through November 3, 2005) may pose a higher risk of driver side airbag rupture than other recalled airbags. These vehicles are being recalled separately due to high risk under campaign 2218A. Click here to determine if your vehicle is affected. Vehicles subject to 2218A should not be driven – Contact a Mazda dealer immediately to have the vehicle repaired.

On certain vehicles, the driver airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.

Correction: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator. Recall Details


  • FORD ESCAPE (2018)

On certain vehicles, incorrect front brake hoses may have been installed and could cause the hoses to contact adjacent components while the vehicle is being driven. This could result in premature wear to the hoses and potentially lead to a brake fluid leak, which could increase stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction:Dealers will replace the wiper link rod with a countermeasure one, and will inspect the wiper motor crank arm and replace as necessary. Recall Details


  • MITSUBISHI RVR (2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016)

On certain vehicles, water may drain from the windshield cowl area onto the front wiper link ball joint. Over time, this could result in corrosion and/or wear to the joint, which could result in the separation of the wiper link ball. If separation were to occur, the windshield wipers could become inoperative, which could limit the driver’s visibility under certain operating conditions which may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the defective sensors as necessary. Note: This will not affect the front airbags of the Prius model. Recall Details

On certain vehicles equipped with a V6 engine, one or both fuel delivery pipes may not have been properly connected to the fuel hoses during assembly. If the fuel delivery pipes are partially engaged, it could result in a fuel odour and/or a fuel leak, which in the presence of an ignition source could increase the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the fuel delivery pipes for proper installation and connect them, as necessary. Recall Details

  • LEXUS LC500 (2018)
  • LEXUS RC F (2016 2017 2018)

On certain vehicles equipped with a 5.0L V8 gasoline engine, a fatigue crack could develop on the cover of the high pressure fuel pump. If the vehicle is operated with this condition, the crack could expand and allow fuel to leak. Leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire, increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the high pressure fuel pumps with improved ones. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA TUNDRA (2017)

Certain vehicles may fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard CMVSS 207 – Anchorage of Seats, CMVSS 210 – Seat Belt Anchorages, CMVSS 210.1 – User-ready Tether Anchorages for Restraint Systems and Booster Seats, and CMVSS 210.2 – Lower Universal Anchorage Systems for Restraint Systems and Booster Seats. One or more of the bolts fixing the left hand rear split seat bracket sub-assemblies to the floor pan may not have been tightened properly during assembly. This could allow the seat to move in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

Correction: Dealers will re-tighten the five seat leg bracket bolts. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI SANTA FE, SANTA FE SPORT (2018)

On certain vehicles, the steering wheel assembly may contain manufacturing defect, and could separate from the steering column while driving. This could result in a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. 

Correction: Dealers will inspect and if necessary install a revised steering wheel assembly. Recall Details
