Canadian Automotive Recalls for February, 2019 – Passenger Vehicles

No one likes to hear that their vehicle has a safety recall notice. They’re unpredictable, unsettling, and can happen at any time. Below you’ll find our February, 2019 summary of passenger vehicle recalls. We’ll be publishing this list at the end of each month, so check back again. The Passenger Vehicle Recalls for February, 2019 are as Follows

  • HONDA RIDGELINE 2017 2018 2019

During a car wash, water can drain from the truck bed onto the top of the fuel pump. Certain car wash detergents containing sulfuric acid could cause damage to the fuel pump. This could cause the fuel pump to crack and create a fuel leak. Safety Risk: Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could increase the risk of a fire. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is cracked, it will be replaced. Dealers will also install a fuel pump cover. Note: Owners who smell a fuel odour or believe there is a fuel leak should contact a dealer immediately.  Recall Details


  • ACURA ILX 2017 2018 2019

On certain vehicles, the bottom of the fuel tank could be deformed. This could cause the fuel gauge to display the wrong fuel level. This could cause a driver to believe there is fuel when the tank is empty. Safety Risk: The vehicle could unexpectedly run out of fuel and stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the fuel tank. All affected fuel tanks will be replaced. Recall Details


  • AUDI A8 2013 2014 2015 2016
  • AUDI S8 2013 2014 2015 2016

On certain vehicles, the fuel line to the high-pressure fuel pump could leak. This may cause a gasoline odour or leak. Safety Risk: Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, creates the risk of a fire.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for repair. A fuel pressure damper will be installed in the low pressure fuel supply located inside the fuel tank. Recall Details


  • BMW X1 2018 2019

On certain vehicles, the brackets for the rear tail lights may crack. This could cause the tail lights to separate from the vehicle. Safety Risk: If the tail lights separate from the vehicle, others may not see the vehicle and its turn signals or brake lights. This could increase the risk of a crash. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the rear tail lights. The mounting nuts will be replaced, and if necessary, dealers will replace the tail lights. Recall Details


  • NISSAN LEAF 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017

When the car is parked in very cold temperatures for a long time, a relay in the brake system may freeze. If this happens, multiple brake warnings will stay on in the instrument cluster after the car is started. The driver may also notice a hard brake pedal. If the car is driven, this could cause an increase in stopping distance. Safety Risk: An increase in stopping distance could create the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will mail owners a letter explaining this problem. The letter will describe how the brake warnings work. Drivers should not drive the car if the warnings stay on. Nissan will provide a 4 year/80,000 km warranty extension to repair the problem with relay freezing. Recall Details


  • MAZDA MX-5 MIATA 2016 2017 2018 2019

A problem with the automatic transmission could cause it to downshift suddenly. This may cause the rear wheels to slow abruptly and create a loss of vehicle stability. Safety Risk: A loss of vehicle stability could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an update to the transmission control module (TCM). Recall Details

  • FORD RANGER 2019

On certain trucks, the transmission shifter may not lock in the park position. This can allow the shifter to be moved without an ignition key and without depressing the brake pedal. This could result in unintended vehicle movement. Safety Risk: Unintended vehicle movement could increase the risk of injury and/or a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their truck to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to check if the shifter is working properly. If a problem is found, the shifter will be repaired. Recall Details


  • RAM 1500 2019

On some vehicles equipped with adjustable pedals, the brake pedal could detach when it is adjusted. This could cause a loss of brakes. Safety Risk: A loss of brakes can create a risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to repair the adjustable pedal assembly. Drivers should not adjust the pedals until the vehicle is fixed. The pedals should never be adjusted while driving. Recall Details


  • FIAT 124 SPIDER 2016 2017 2018 2019

 A problem with the automatic transmission could cause it to downshift suddenly. This may cause the rear wheels to slow abruptly and create a loss of vehicle stability. Safety Risk: A loss of vehicle stability could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

  • CADILLAC ATS 2017
  • CADILLAC CTS 2017

A problem with the power steering system could cause it to turn off while driving. The power steering assist may return when the vehicle is restarted. Safety Risk: A loss of power steering assist would result in a sudden increase in steering effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. This could increase the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the power steering gear assembly replaced. Recall Details


  • CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD 2016 2017 2018
  • GMC SIERRA HD 2016 2017 2018

On certain 3500 series trucks, the level sensor in the front fuel tank may malfunction. In rare cases, the front fuel tank may over-fill and expand, causing it to contact the driveshaft. Operators may hear a grinding or knocking noise if this happens. This could create a hole in the tank and cause a fuel leak. Note: This problem only affects cab and chassis models equipped with a gasoline engine and dual fuel tanks. Safety Risk: Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, creates the risk of a fire.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the rear-tank fuel-pump module replaced. Dealers will also inspect the front tank and replace if necessary. Recall Details


  • FORD F150 2011 2012 2013

On some trucks, a sensor problem may cause the transmission to suddenly downshift to first gear. This could cause the rear wheels to suddenly slow and potentially create a loss of stability. Safety Risk: A loss of vehicle stability could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the Powertrain Control Module reprogrammed. Recall Details


  • FORD MUSTANG 2019
  • LINCOLN MKX 2019
  • LINCOLN NAVIGATOR 2019

On certain vehicles, the instrument cluster may be blank upon start-up. If this happens, the driver would not be provided with information and warnings about vehicle systems. Safety Risk: If the driver is not provided with information about the vehicle’s systems, there could be an increased risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the instrument cluster display reprogrammed. Recall Details


  • LINCOLN CONTINENTAL 2017 2018 2019

On certain vehicles, the door latches may not fully latch when a door is closed. If a door is not properly latched, it could open while the vehicle is moving. Safety Risk: A door that opens while the vehicle is moving could create an increased risk of injury.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the latch assemblies replaced on all four doors. Recall Details


  • BMW Z4 2019

On certain vehicles, the accelerator pedal may interfere with a wiring harness. This could cause the accelerator pedal to get stuck. Safety Risk: A stuck accelerator pedal would lead to unintended acceleration of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the accelerator pedal module wiring harness. The wiring harness will be moved and secured if necessary. All vehicles will be repaired prior to sale. Recall Details


  • AUDI A3 2018
  • AUDI RS3 2018

On certain vehicles, the center-rear seat head restraint may detach in a crash. Safety Risk: If the head restraint detaches in a crash, it could increase the risk of injury to occupants.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the center-rear seat head restraint inspected. If the latching pins are missing, the head restraint will be replaced. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE 2019

On certain vehicles, the brake warning light does not turn on when the electronic brake force distribution system malfunctions. This could cause a driver to be unaware of a problem with the brake system. Safety Risk: A driver that is not aware of a problem with the brake system could lose control of the vehicle during emergency braking. This could cause an increased risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the instrument cluster software. Recall Details


  • TOYOTA CAMRY HV 2019

On certain vehicles, the fuel filler pipe may not have been properly connected to the fuel tank. This could result in a fuel leak. Safety Risk: Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, creates the risk of a fire.

Correction:  The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the fuel filler pipe inspected. If the fuel filler pipe is not properly connected, it will be replaced. Recall Details


  • BMW X5 2019

On certain vehicles, the bolts for the driver’s seat and/or seat belt may not be properly tightened. This could cause the seat or seat belt come loose or detach in a crash. Drivers may notice a rattling noise in the area near the bottom of the seat if the bolts are loose. Safety Risk: A driver that is not properly restrained could be injured in a crash.

Correction:The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a BMW dealer to have the bolts for the driver’s seat and seat belt inspected and tightened, as required. Recall Details


  • VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 2019

On certain vehicles, an incorrect driver-front airbag may have been installed during a past service/repair visit. As the airbag was not designed to be used in the vehicle, it may not work correctly. Safety Risk: In a crash with an airbag deployment, the airbag may not work correctly. This could increase the risk of injury.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the driver-front airbag replaced with the correct part. Recall Details


  • PORSCHE CAYENNE 2019
  • PORSCHE PANAMERA 2017 2018
  • PORSCHE PANAMERA E-HYBRID 2018
  • PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO 2017 2018

On certain vehicles, the red brake wear warning light does not come on when the brake pads are worn out. This could increase the risk of the vehicle being driven with worn out brake pads. Note: A yellow warning message will be displayed if the brake pads wear out. Safety Risk: Driving a vehicle with worn out brake pads could increase the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the instrument cluster software. Recall Details


  • PORSCHE CAYENNE 2019
  • PORSCHE PANAMERA 2017 2018
  • PORSCHE PANAMERA E-HYBRID 2018
  • PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO 2017 2018

On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the backup camera display. The rearview image may be slow to appear on the center console screen when in reverse. Safety Risk: This could affect a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while backing. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the instrument cluster software. Recall Details


  • AUDI Q7 2019
  • AUDI Q8 2019

On certain vehicles, the front shock absorber forks may crack. This may allow the shock absorber to come loose and cause the tire to contact the wheel housing. This could affect steering control. Safety Risk: If the steering system does not work properly, there could be an increased risk of a crash.

Correction:  The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the affected shock absorber fork(s) replaced. Recall Details


  • PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO 2019

On certain vehicles, the front shock absorber forks may crack. This may allow the shock absorber to come loose, which could affect steering control. Safety Risk: If the steering system does not work properly, there could be an increased risk of a crash. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the affected shock absorber fork(s) replaced. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS 2017 2018
  • MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS 2017 2018

On certain coupe and cabriolet models, the front seatbacks may not fully lock on the right side. In a crash, a seatback that is not properly locked could allow unsecured objects from the rear seats to move forward. Safety Risk: A seatback that is not properly locked could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect front seatbacks and replace them as necessary. Note: This is an expansion of Recall 2018-161. Recall Details


  • NISSAN QASHQAI 2017 2018
  • NISSAN ROGUE 2017 2018

In certain driving situations, a metal structure like a railroad crossing or overhead sign could cause the Automatic Emergency Braking system (AEB) to activate when it is not needed. If this happens, the system would provide a collision warning. If the driver takes no action, the vehicle could slow suddenly or come to a complete stop. Safety Risk: If the AEB system activates with braking when no potential collision is present, it could increase the risk of a crash.

Correction:  The company will send a letter to owners to explain this issue. Owners will be informed that a software update is available for the AEB system. This update can be installed at a dealership at no charge to the owner. Recall Details


  • KIA SPORTAGE 2011 2012

The engine oil pan seal could leak on some vehicles with a 2.4 L engine. If the leak is not repaired, over time this could lead to engine damage or an engine failure. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of motive power with an inability to restart. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash. In some cases, an engine failure may also result in a fire. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. Note: A driver may notice any of the following symptoms before an engine failure: an oil leak under the vehicle, a smell of hot or burning oil, a knocking sound from the engine, reduced power or hesitation, a check engine light, and/or an oil pressure warning light. Recall Details


  • KIA OPTIMA 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
  • KIA SORENTO 2015 2016 2017 2018
  • KIA SPORTAGE 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018

When the engine was replaced under warranty or under Kia’s Product Improvement Campaign SC023, the high pressure fuel pipe may not have been properly installed on the fuel pump outlet. A fuel leak could occur if the pipe was damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the recall repair. Safety Risk: Leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source could increase the risk of a fire.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection. If fuel leakage is detected, the fuel pipe will be replaced with a new one. Recall Details


  • LEXUS LS 500 2018
  • LEXUS LS 500H 2018

On certain vehicles, a crack could develop on the sidewall of the tire. Over time, the crack could expand and could lead to a partial tread separation. Safety Risk: A tire tread separation could affect vehicle stability and increase the risk of a crash.

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the tires. If the vehicle has one or more affected tires, all four tires will be replaced. Recall Details


  • HYUNDAI TUCSON 2011 2012 2013

  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLA CLASS 2018

On certain vehicles, the top tether anchorage point for a child seat in the rear-center seating position may be covered by a carpet. As a result, a child seat cannot be properly installed. Safety Risk: A child seat that is not properly installed could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the rear backrest cover (carpet) inspected. It will be replaced if necessary. Recall Details


  • KIA SOUL 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

On certain vehicles, the catalytic converter may be damaged by overheating. This could also cause engine damage or an engine failure. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure may also result in a fire. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the engine software updated. This update will prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. Vehicles will also be inspected for other damage. Depending on the results of the inspection, the catalytic converter and/or the engine may be replaced. Note: A driver may notice any of the following symptoms of this problem: a knocking sound from the engine, reduced power or hesitation, and/or the illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or check engine light. Recall Details


  • MERCEDES-BENZ GLA CLASS 2018

On certain vehicles, the top tether anchorage point for a child seat in the rear-center seating position may be covered by a carpet. As a result, a child seat cannot be properly installed. Safety Risk: A child seat that is not properly installed could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. 

Correction: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the rear backrest cover (carpet) inspected. It will be replaced if necessary. Recall Details
